You have NO belief how ecstatic I am that Female Anxiety is finally being released on DVD. It has to be my all time celebrated cult movie ever. John Waters brings so worthy of his trade-mark trash to the movie that it stands-out as one of his most signature early pieces, even though he had already made movies such as Pink Flamingos, Mondo Trasho and Eat Your Make-Up. Divine definately shines in the staring role as Dawn Davenport. Tired of her popular social life at home, Dawn decides that she will construct her beget notice on the world and does so as no other woman can! Dawn goes from a high school misfit, to a go-go dancer, a cafe waitress, a theif, a high-fashion crime model, and a serial killer, all while trying to be a loving mother to her spoiled retarded daughter Taffy, played by another John Waters star regular Mink Stole. And let’s not forget about the third star of the movie who you won’t be able to forget no matter how hard you try: Edith Massey! Edith, the grotesque diva that also stars in a number of John’s films, plays Aunt Ida, the aunt to Divine’s worthless hairdresser husband. John gives her more of a ‘glamorous’ role compared to her earlier character in Pink Flamingos. In Female Distress, honest give Edith a glass of Sherry and she becomes a shadowy spandex wearing diva who can establish Olivia Newton-John to shame! While this is definately NOT a movie for everyone, it is very high on humor and camp. So, if you’re a sizable cult classic fan, and not prudish or weak-of-stomach, this is one DVD you should NOT miss out on!
Pink Flamingos and Female Anguish are among the best films by director John Waters, and to have them TOGETHER and on DVD is a thrill. Since I bought the disks, my life has been like a vacation!
There are one or two things, however, which probably need to be said about the DVD. Because Pink Flamingos and Female Pains were originated on 16mm. film, the fresh wide-screen transfer is somewhat of a violation. Most of the time it isn’t really a quandary — especially in Pink Flamingos. But there are scenes in Female Concern when the reframing well-known to approximate a wide-screen image has almost eliminated vital visual information at the top and bottom of the frame.
In the Christmas Tree scene, for example, one can now only barely spy Dawn’s slippers as she goes on her elephantesque rampage. The scene is smooth silly, but not as noteworthy so. There are several other examples, but I leave them for you to glance. I wish that NewLine had the courage to “Window Box” these films, or at least former standard TV shroud ratio instead of cropping them into a widescreen ratio they were never meant to have.

I am puzzled, too, by some of the soundtrack from Pink Flamingos. My frail VHS copy (and all the film copies I have seen) spend music cues from “The Planets” for those shots where the Marbles survey on Divine’s birthday party. Though the party music itself remains the same on the DVD (and on the previous Laser-Disk), the intercut shots now have a different musical accompanyment. What happened?
I am very cheerful that the extinguish credit sequence in Female Grief has been _restored_ so to insist (actually, it was re-created rather than truly restored. But it’s nice all the same) .
Now that I have that out of my system, let me go on to say that I am looking forward to the day when ALL of the works of John’s are on DVD. Wouldn’t a disk dwelling of Multiple Maniacs and Mondo Trasho be especially nice? Maybe they could throw in The Diane Linkletter Account as an extra feature. Or how about a reissue of Polyester, complete with the Scratch and Sniff cards? I could personally really go for a disk combining Water’s VERY EARLY films – such as Roman Candles, Hag in a Unlit Leather Jacket and Eat Your Makeup.

Watch with: Each other, of course! What else could you possibly need? But if you wanted to create a marathon of it, why not: “Faster Pussycat, Destroy Waste”, “Blood Feast”, “2,000 Maniacs”, Querelle, or anything starring Jayne Mansfield.

1955’s “The Prodigal” was MGM’s most ambitious film of the year, filmed at a cost of $5,000,000 with the draw of being one of the “really critical Biblical spectacles of all time.” Adapted from 22 verses of the Fresh Testament book of Luke, it was indeed a lavish spectacle. Lana Turner didn’t like the script, but was compelled because of her studio contract to star in the movie. Making the most of her station, she redesigned her costumes to stutter as noteworthy flesh as the Production Code would allow, making herself “as sensuous, sexy, and beautiful as possible.” Needless to say, her bold (for 1955) costumes are the best reason to inspect this movie!

“The Prodigal Son” is Micah (Edmund Purdom), who honors his aging father Eli (Walter Hampden) by becoming engaged to Ruth, a kind-hearted woman who also shares his faith in God. But when Micah visits Damascus, he sees Samarra (Lana Turner), the high priestess of Astarte, goddess of the flesh, and he is instantly captivated by her radiant beauty. Despite the fact that Samarra worships deceptive gods and presides over human sacrifices, Micah leaves home after breaking off his engagement to Ruth. He brings his inheritance from his father with him and begins spending it posthaste.
Damascus proves to be Micah’s drop from grace, as he is victimized by Nahreeb the high priest of Baal, Bosra the crook, and by Samarra herself, who uses her beauty to pull Micah away from his religious beliefs. After wasting all his inheritance on Samarra, Micah is thrown in prison. After a successful dash, he leads a revolt against the contemptible dynasty of Baal and its idol worshippers. He confronts Samarra and offers her a chance to dash, but her stubborn opinion in her untrue gods proves to be her downfall as she faces the rage of the starved people of Damascus.

In spite of the immense budget, the critics almost universally slammed “The Prodigal” following its May 1955 theatrical release. One called the movie “$5,000,000 worth of spacious sets, garish costumes, eye-popping spectacle, vulgarity, sin, seduction, and a edifying demonstrate of flesh.” But, even the critics couldn’t suppose the fact that Lana Turner was at her sexiest in this movie. Sidney Skolsky wrote that the “long hotfoot Lana takes through the Temple of Admire in The Prodigal is the best reason for seeing the represent. Pure poetry in motion…” In spite of the flaws with the script, few can state the fact that this movie provided the ultimate showcase for Lana Turner’s breathtaking figure!
From the Golden Age of Hollywood comes The Prodigal (1955), a MGM release. This “Biblical” narrative, based on the Recent Testament narrative of The Prodigal son, tells of the adventure of the young man who enters the pagan world and discovers the mysteries and charms of Miss Lana Turner, high priestess of the temple of a graven, cruel, jealous god, and the dangers of forbidden adore. Edmund Purdom is the prodigal who is smitten by Turner’s Samarra. The chronicle plods along with some over-blown and sometimes trite dialogue, but the costumes and sets are eye-popping. This movie era could only manufacture such grandier and Miss Turner as the colorful center, is sinfully stunning. She reveals more of her self as any considerable younger actress would dare at the time. And she looks superior. Survey this spectacular entry for what we may never contemplate in today’s cinema.

The Yu-Gi-Oh! seasons before this one never keen me very worthy, but this one really got my attention. There is a lot of faded mythology woven into this storyline and a few preludes to site up the Dawn of the Duel chronicle arc (the second half of Season 5 and the final myth arc of this series) . For those who unprejudiced want to survey card tournaments in cartoon build, however, this may not be for you. The storyline is worthy more keen than a few trustworthy (or not so agreeable) card games, and the battles do seem slow compared with wanting more of the yarn to be revealed. It seems like people who loved the first three seasons were not as fond of this one, and people who weren’t impressed with the first 3 seasons loved this. One of the defining moments of this arc, the first duel with Rafael and his Guardians, will prefer situation on Season 4 volume 2 (the next DVD, due out in Feb. 2006) . Personally, this is my well-liked Yu-Gi-Oh! season of all.

Three stout short films from Japan based on the common series advance together in edited develop to accomplish 90 minutes of entertainment. And having Kari, one of the characters, narate the account gives the appearance of one account, which adds to the strength of this movie
The first movie is approximately 10-15 minutes long and details what happened four years before the first season of the prove. Tai and his sister Kari gaze a digi egg exit from their computer shroud and a little Digimon is born. Kari becomes attached to this creature. Eventually, the Digimon digivolves to Greymon and protects the city from Parrotmon.
The first movie has it’s moment. Young Kari is adorable and even in young Tai we already start to eye Tai the leader of the Digidestined that we perceive in the first season of Digimon. The friendship between Kari and Agumon also adds a touching element to the chronicle. It’s almost heartbreaking when, after the Digimon disappears, Kari yells out, “Don’t you wanna play with me anymore? “

We snappy forward four years later. The second movie takes plot after the first season of the indicate. It’s unclear exactly when. Izzy, one of the Digidestined, joins with Tai to try and defeat this curious Digimon who is invading the internet. With the aid of their Digimon, Agumon and Tentomon, they try to battle this unusual Digimon. But this Digimon keeps digivolving at an accelerated rate. So Izzy contacts the other Digidestined and manages to acquire Matt and TK to benefit along with their Digimon…Patamon and Gabumon. Agumon and Gabumon are able to digivolve to their Mega level…and eventually join together and defeat this infamous Digimon….or so they mediate…
The second movie has a lot of action…but every few minutes, the action goes down a bit so we can have some humor. The main subplot of the second movie involves a amusing argument between Tai and Sora. Tai tried to give Sora a hair clip for her birthday and Sora thinks this is Tai’s draw of criticizing her hairstyle.
Women! They always have to analyze everything. Anyway…the battles are intense and the music objective sizable. Many songs from the tv note are played during the battle and you can’t benefit but announce along…if you like the music, of course.
The third movie takes residence four years later…Sometime during the second season. (Actually, the second season serene hasn’t reached the point at which this allotment of this movie is state. This is clearly seen because in the indicate, Patamon and Gatomon don’t have the ability to warp digivolve yet, an ability they clearly have in this movie.) Anyway…in this piece of the movie, we learn that the spoiled Digimon four years ago was created by Willis and is actually a computer virus. And it wasn’t really defeated. It somehow escaped into the staunch world and has infected one of Willis’ digimon. Willis is also a Digidestined and has twin digimon. Anyway…for the past four years, one of Willis’s Digimon was infected with the virus and making Willis’ life dejected. But with the wait on of Davis and the other Digidestined, they manage to defeat the virus again and free Cocomon from the virus’ control.

The third movie, while not as charming as the first two, has some moments. Humor is one of it’s strenght. The position is a bit vague…but it doesn’t harm the movie in general.
So, if you are a fan of the demonstrate, you will not be dissappointed by this movie.
Digimon: The Movie is a segment of three movies, all relased seperately in Japan. In movie 1, before season one (the current airings on telivision), Tai (Taichi) and Kari (Hikari), two special characters, meet Koromon at ages 7 and 4. Tai is 7, Kari is 4. They meet a special Digimon who turns out to be Tai’s partner in season 1. This movie was short and to me, handsome un-interesting, but I loved it anyhow!
Movie 2, aka Section 2, takes dwelling after season 1. Izzy (Koushiro) discovers a DigiEgg on the computer. It hatches in to a baby digimon, and begins to eat up data on the internet. Soon, people from all over the world are watching the battle between Diaboromon (strongest level of digimon) on their computers. Even Yolei (Miyako) from season 2 at a young age appears, sending e-mails along with other kids to Tai, Izzy, Matt (Yamato), and T.K. (Takeru) . Eventually, they beat Diaboromon.
Movie 3 takes state during season 2. Davis (Daisuke), Yolei, Cody (Iori), T.K. and Kari are hanging out at a beach. Davis, Yolei, and Cody are all recent Digidestined, mind you. They meet Willis and his Digimon Terriermon. He had twin Digimon, Terriermon and Lopmon, but Lopmon ran away and grew up confused and tainted. Now Lopmon, aka “Endigomon”, tells Willis to “go serve”, as Willis comes from Colorado. WIllis created Diaboromon when he wanted three Digimon instead of two. But, when he made Diaboromon, a virus infected him and so started movie 2. But, they slice out HALF OF THIS MOVIE in the American version. Endigomon originally captures the venerable Digidestined in order to secure Willis. THEY Crop THIS OUT! HALF OF THE MOVIE! But, it was so cold, my grandparents even liked it! “Kids in America” by Len is playing during the credits. PRODIGIOUS MOVIE! I also have a movie clip of the reduce scenes in Japanese. PRODIGIOUS MOVIE!

The behind astronomical Polish director Krzysztof Kieslowski cleverly “adapted” the three French ideals — liberty, equality, fraternity — into three thought-provoking modern-day dramas about people who cope with personal losses and tragedies. In BLUE, the first of the trilogy, a widow tries to state herself free (and acquire liberty) from her emotional baggages. The second film, WHITE, is about a jilted man’s contemptible dwelling to gather even (thus, equality) with his ex-wife. The last film, RED, which is also Kieslowski’s final film before he died in 1996, is about a lonely customary man who is embittered by the memories of his youth and finds accidental companionship (fraternity) with a young model. All three films are understated in their tone, economical in their dialogs, elliptical in their editing and plotting (there are some mind-boggling flashbacks and flash forwards in WHITE), and haunting in their atmosphere.
The references to the three French ideals are actually quite tenuous, and in fact more and more so as the trilogy progresses. BLUE is the only one that deals with the ideal of “freedom” (albeit emotional freedom) in a concrete design, consuming us to ponder its meanings and its attainability. WHITE treats the view of “equality” in a rather subversive and satiric draw, and it clearly wants us to rethink its meanings rather than accepting it at face value. And RED has to do with “fraternity” only circumstantially, and has more to do with the direct of destiny, and how our past is linked to our indicate. The three films are station not unprejudiced in France, but also in Poland and Switzerland, and WHITE has primarily Polish dialogs. Hence, a sort of universality is intended.
The three films are also linked in various ways. All three films involve an unfaithful lover who dies, in one intention or another. All three films involve a chance encounter between the distressed protagonist and a sympathetic observer — the widow and the mistress in BLUE, Karol and Mikolaj in WHITE, the retired deem and the model in RED. Both BLUE and WHITE are about people who recede to unusual surroundings to hurry from his or her paralyzed pasts. And RED, ironically, is about someone who never leaves his home in order to wallow in his self-pity.

Kieslowski had done this sort of thing before. In 1988, he “adapted” the Ten Commandments into ten one-hour, modern-day dramas, collectively titled DECALOGUE, that form us rethink the meanings of the commandments. In the segment for “Thou Shalt Not Occupy,” for instance, we peruse the kidnapping (the theft) of a child from her adopted parents by her natural mother, who thinks she has a good to her custody. Thus, it turns clear-cut correct ideals into real-world dramas that have no clear-cut solutions or judgments.
Miramax released long-awaited Region-1 DVDs for the Three Colors trilogy, and they all have well-behaved video transfers and rewarding extra material. Kieslowski expert Annette Insdorf provides grand running commentaries for all three films. She analyzes the visual, aural, and editorial techniques, the thematic significance, as well as how the final films deviate from their modern screenplays. She points out that Kieslowski films often deal with abstract concepts, such as fate, death, and difficulty, in very concrete ways. She makes an observant articulate about the apparent twist of fate in the opening of BLUE: if the hitchhiker were picked up by the family, the ensuing tragedy might not occur. She points out that the dream-like wedding scene in WHITE, which many prefer is a flashback, could also be a flash forward (a very provocative, and plausible, concept) . She offers her interpretations to the many symbolisms in the films, such as the frequent fades to sunless in BLUE, the recurring shot of a stooped former person at a garbage bin, the significance of the concerto music in BLUE, the tango theme in WHITE, and the bolero catch in RED. She also explains the intentionally cryptic endings of WHITE and RED.
Each disc comes with several featurettes that comprise about 100 minutes of interviews and commentaries by the cast and crew, Insdorf, film critic Geoff Andrew, and film director Agnieszka Holland. The BLUE and WHITE discs also have some early short films by Kieslowski: CONCERT OF WISHES, THE TROLLEY, THE FACE, THE OFFICE. All three discs gain a entertaining segment called “Kieslowski’s Cinema Lesson,” in which the director explains his intentions in one particular scene. The WHITE and RED discs absorb behind-the-scenes footage of Kieslowski giving directions on the plot. For Kieslowski fans, perhaps the most poignant clip in these supplements is that of Kieslowski announcing his retirement at the ‘94 Cannes festival, included on the RED disc.
The Three Colors Trilogy comprises 3 kindly films (Bleu/Blanc/Rouge) by the tedious, vast director Krzysztof Kieslowski. The films spend the symbolism expressed by the colors of the French flag for their themes (liberty, equality, fraternity) . The Three Colors is Kieslowski’s crowning achievement, and Rouge, his final film, is probably his masterpiece. That’s saying something, because some of his previous films (Decalogue, The Double Life of Veronique) are among the greatest films of the last 20 years! I saw Bleu (with Juliette Binoche) a long time ago and was very impressed. It’s a dark but beautful movie, about a composer’s widow and how she copes with life after his death. Blanc (with Julie Delpy) is about life for a man after he is unceremoniously dumped by his wife; it’s the lightest and most comedic of the three films. Rouge (with Irene Jacob) is my celebrated and explores the discouraged (and platonic) relationship that develops between a young lady and an older man. Jacob is quite simply a goddess, and if you can glide your eyes away from her long enough to pay attention to the movie, you’ll regain this is a thematically rich film with solid, subtle performances (Kieslowski was nominated for a Best Director Oscar for Rouge in 1995) . I am lucky enough to believe a DVD of Rouge which has a ton of extras (making of, deleted scenes, soundtrack samples, trailers, film-making lesson by the director, Cannes festival interviews, extended interviews with editor, director, and *sigh* Irene Jacob) . I beget the upcoming Miramax DVDs keep these features (with subtitles), which are in French. More Americans should experience these films. They are so well-made and lovingly crafted that they set to shame all the multi-million dollar, shallow, explosion-fests routinely shovelled out by Hollywood nowadays. Next to Stanley Kubrick and Akira Kurosawa, Krzysztof Kieslowski’s death in the 1990s is one of the most tragic for cinema. Younger filmmakers should hope one day to near even an iota of the MANY shiny masterpieces created of these film masters. Explore The Three Colors Trilogy! This is film-making at its finest and totally a 5 STAR recommendation!

I first saw this film as a boy in what was probably its second race through the theatres in the mid ’50’s. I loved it then; my now 25 year extinct son loved it in the ’80’s and I care for it today. It is a ’50’s era cowboy v. Indian shoot ‘em up in an recent locale, the Florida Everglades.
The state is very straightforward–Coop is an army officer in pre Civil War Florida who has seen his Indian wife murdered and lives with his son and a staunch detachment of soldiers on his hold island. The awful guys are running guns to the “hostiles” from a fort on the other side of Lake Okeechobee. Coop and his men are sent on a mission to capture the fort, end it and return home. They go by boat and bewitch care of the fort but things go awry and they must mettlesome the swamps on foot with a Seminole war party hot on their heels as they try to return home.
The movie basically consists of Coop getting his assignment, taking the fort and then, for the last 75% of the film, trying to come by home against big odds. This one is solid action from virtually open to effect in the ’50’s excellent guys v. awful guys style. It is superbly done. Accepting it for what it intends to be, I relish it fair as considerable at 50+ years of age as I did as an 8 year conventional.

If you are a baby boomer and loved the action films and TV shows of your youth, you will thoroughly devour this one. Not only does it feature Coop in the lead–his usual serene but heroic and resolute self–but the supporting actors are generous. Arthur Hunnicutt as Monk is worthy. Hunnicutt received an academy award nomination for a similar role in “The Astronomical Sky” several years later. He was a Walter Brennan type–just as qualified but not as well known. He played Davy Crockett in Republic’s “The Last Affirm” and was a salubrious sidekick to John Wayne and Robert Mitchum in “El Dorado” nearly 15 years later. Hard core baby boomers may remember Robert Webb, whose character is the narrator, as TV’s Saturday morning action adventurer “Captain Midnight.”
This film does an kindly job of creating and maintaining suspense from inaugurate to execute. I can not conceive of anyone who likes ’50’s action films not thoroughly enjoying it. Why anyone would stare it as “racist” is beyond me. It’s impartial the troopers against the Indians–just like any western of the era, except plot in Florida against the Seminoles pre Civil War instead of in the west after. Coop’s character was married to an Indian princess and has a surviving son with her. This is racist? Please!
One point of notice is that the fort extinct by the gunrunners and taken by the troopers early in the film is the Castillo de San Marcos–constructed in the 1600’s and level-headed standing in St. Augustine, Florida. You can tour it today. The illustrious Seminole chief, Osceolea, was held prisoner there but escaped.

See the film, recognize the fort. They are both fun.
In a previous review, dgraeter seems to have covered most of the bases and I agree wholeheartedly. I loved “Distant Drums” as a kid and it’s objective as worthy today, remaining a pleasing actioner area in a lush and modern setting – Florida pre-Civil War and pre-tourist! Having lived not 30 miles from place filming, I enjoy the scenery, birds, etc. even more today than as a child.
Cooper is comely as Quincy Wyatt, smooth yet exuding strength and purpose. The rest of the cast is admirable in a shoot that must have been trying under the best of conditions.
As far as supporting actors go, check out Sheb Wooley as Private Jessup in his first appearance with Gary Cooper. His next would be in “High Noon” as Ben Miller.
Action, adventure, space, Seminoles, ladies in pain, heroism, alligators, tropical birds, underwater photography (I read somewhere that a special underwater camera was developed unbiased to film the fight scene between Cooper and the Seminole chief) …if there’s anything more to ask from a movie, I’m stumped.
Check out “Distant Drums.” You won’t regret it!

This Summer of 2009 is a Lucy Summer! In July we are getting the first season of The Lucy Demonstrate, thanks to CBS/Paramount and on August 25th, we are getting the first season of Here’s Lucy, thanks to MPI Home Video. Some of the grand shows of Here’s Lucy have already been on dvd by Wail!Factory, and it is a sizable location, but now we finally pick up to have all of it complete!
When I heard Here’s Lucy Season 1 is being effect out by MPI Home Video, I immediately contacted MPI for more information- especially about the quality of the video! For anyone who is familiar with MPI Home Video’s quality of their dvd’s, you know they can be obnoxious or grand. MPI effect out the first season of The Beverly Hillbillies, The Honeymooners 6 sets and Hullabaloo’s- all very unpleasant quality, loaded with graininess and scratches. MPI also achieve out The Doris Day Show- all 5 seasons and Family Affair’s all 5 seasons, and the quality is profitable, very elegant and crystal certain! MPI is also known for putting out all of a show’s seasons separately and then in a complete space later on. I spoke to MPI directly to gain out the quality they are putting into Here’s Lucy Season 1, and they assured me that they are remastering the fresh 35 mm film, in exactly the same arrangement they did for Doris Day and Family Affair. This means the dvd’s will be absolutely gracious in color, crystal determined piquant record and a orderly film! As a broad Lucy fan, this was huge news for me! They also stated, that on June 30th, 2009, they are putting out the first of The Lucille Ball Specials dvd. These are two specials that Lucy made after Here’s Lucy, starring with Dean Martin and Jackie Gleason. Both Here’s Lucy and The Lucille Ball Specials will have extra’s included. I was really ecstatic to observe that the film quality is absolutely satisfactory on this first season! The perfect relate, sparkling color and detailed sharpness are beyond my expectations!

Here’s Lucy was Lucille Ball’s third television exhibit, that premiered on CBS on September 23,1968. The explain started out with weaker than expected ratings, but gradually picked up during it’s 6 season rush, from 1968 to 1974. Lucy played a widower, Lucy Carter with 2 teenage children Kim and Craig Carter. The children were played by her real-life children Lucie Arnaz and Desi Arnaz Jr.. Their Uncle Harry was played by Gale Gordon and Vivian Vance also made guest star appearances in this exhibit. Lucy, as a single mom, worked at the Original Employment Agency, which allowed her to express, dance and act with the many fantastic special guest stars she featured on this explain. Lucille Ball began her third weekly series on CBS on September 23rd, 1968. After selling “The Lucy Explain” to Paramount, Lucy wanted to occupy her beget expose, so she created “Lucille Ball Productions” to fabricate her original sitcom. Lucy had already finished an unbelievable hurry on CBS with her “I Like Lucy” display in the ’50’s, and her 1962-1968 series “The Lucy Point To” never went out of the top 10. It was very distinguished for CBS to maintain her as the network knew Lucy had a real fan wicked that wanted to sight her week after week. “The Lucy Expose” finished its final season in 1968 at #2 in the national Nielsen numbers, so expectations were high that “Here’s Lucy” would be an even bigger hit. Lucy had nothing to peril about: both the fans and critics loved her original exhibit, with “Here’s Lucy” staying in the top 10 in its first three years.
“Here’s Lucy” was different than Lucy’s other two series in that she cast her real-life children, Lucie Arnaz and Desi Arnaz Jr., as her on-screen kids Kim and Craig. Lucy also brought befriend the wonderful Gale Gordon as her brother-in-law Harry and boss at the Original Employment Agency in Los Angeles, which was the setting of the series. Lucy played Gale’s crazy secretary. The wacky redhead continued to fabricate viewers laugh for six more years on CBS, and many fans, including this one, occupy “Here’s Lucy” was Lucille Ball’s best television work. Lucy has even admitted that out of all her shows, this one was her celebrated.
As the 1970’s arrived CBS wanted to change its image as the “rural network” by canning shows that featured longtime tv personalities like Ed Sullivan. Lucille Ball was a different chronicle however. “Here’s Lucy” would continue well into the ’70’s as CBS’ top-rated note. In 1970-1971 “Here’s Lucy” finished the year as CBS’ #1 program!
In 2004 “Here’s Lucy” made its debut on DVD with a 24 episode boxset featuring the best episodes of the series. That boxset has a ton of special bonuses including commentary by Lucy’s kids, rare network TV promos for the reveal, a mighty more. In this modern “Here’s Lucy” Season One Boxset special features will include novel videotaped interviews never seen before and unusual introductions by both Lucie Arnaz and Desi Arnaz Jr.. It is unbelievable to scrutinize MPI bringing attend this beloved display that has been rarely seen on television in the past two decades. The series had a CBS daytime hasten from May-November 1977, and in 1982 “Here’s Lucy” went into national syndication. The sitcom has rarely been seen on cable stations as it surprisingly does not bring in reliable ratings. In the slow ’90’s PAX TV aired the present for awhile then it disappeared. The studio also promises to release every season in individual boxsets so that is something to applaud.
This boxset contains all 24 shows of the first year uncut and digitally remastered from the studio’s 35 mm negatives for suitable video and audio clarity. A total of 144 episodes of “Here’s Lucy” were produced. The first three seasons were fimed at Paramount studios in Hollywood, but the last three years were shot at Universal. The most well-known episode was the season premiere of the third season in 1970 featuring Liz Taylor and Richard Burton. That episode catapulted “Here’s Lucy” to the top of the ratings and establish Lucy and the Burtons on the camouflage of TV Guide that week.
In the show’s first season boxset many stars are featured including Jackie Gleason, Shelley Winters, Jack Benny, Wayne Newton, and more. The pilot of “Here’s Lucy” is included called “Mod, Mod Lucy”, where Lucy has to build in the station of her daughter in a band. Lucy tries to bid, albeit with her mouthing the words to a picture, and she proves she is quite a dancer. You will laugh hysterically when Lucy comes out donning a dim wig, trying to be a teenager. She really fits in with the younger generation!
Many other celebrities graced “Here’s Lucy” over its hasten including Eva Gabor, Carol Burnett, Ann-Margret, Johnny Carson, and more. Vivian Vance also made many guest-star appearances over the years as Aunt Viv to the delight of fans everywhere.
Don’t forget too that “The Lucy Point To” makes it first-time debut on DVD in July with the Complete First Season boxset. That series too is noble.
UPDATE: “HERE’S LUCY-THE COMPLETE SECOND SEASON” ARRIVES IN STORES NOVEMBER 3rd, 2009!!!

Ask anyone who has had the opportunity to peep this film as it meandered its device through the indie festivals, and they will recount you that this hilarious cramped gem has kept many an audience in stitches and should have found distribution a long time ago. Not only is the material novel and off-the-cuff with improvisation-o-plenty, but the anecdote is one that is easy to narrate too while at the same time being so absurdly over-the-top that one cannot aid but let out a snicker at how paintball gets the pudgy mockumentary treatment, though in a fresh style differentiated from those of the “Guest” lineage (Spinal Tap, Great Wind,Best In Demonstrate, etc…) . If you are a fan of improv then you will like the pedigree of this cast, many of which have gone through the Lawful Citizens Brigade Comedy Troupe, and have also made appearances on Comedy Central, SNL, and Enraged TV. The talent is there, and these folks exercise it to their fullest – so mighty so that you focus on the characters, and not the shoe-string budget that assign this film into the ranks of an instant cult accepted.
If you have difficulty discerning a mockumentary from a documentary then you should by all means halt away from this movie. . . I’m looking at you Randy Givens, Mr. I-gave-this-movie-1-star-because-I-thought-it-was-real. But if your brain is working above the level of a newborn then by all means check out this hilarious mockumentary. If you’re a fan of The Daily Note, The Moral Citizens Brigade or Human Giant, then this is a must-see treat for you. Prefer Riggle will have you in stitches.

Movie Title: Blow Blow is available for streaming or downloading. |
I initially had no interest in this film, thinking who wants to eye a movie about some two bit dope dealer? My teenage son, however, rented the DVD, and I found myself a captive audience. To my surprise, it was a riveting, well done film. Clear, it was about a two bit dope dealer, but what a myth. George Jung, an all American kid from a hard working, hard knocks family, begins dealing marijuana during the 1960s. He develops his business into an empire, and then he decides to branch out into the sexier world of cocaine and really colossal money. Using his worthy entrepreneurial instinct, he makes a deal with the Columbian drug cartel. Before you know it, he is raking in millions. Unfortunately, the best laid plans often go awry, and there is no fairy narrative ending for George. This is a myth of hopes, dreams, violence, greed, and betrayal.
Well directed by the slow Ted Demme, the film is compelling and titillating as it recounts George Jung’s fabulous odyssey in the drug trade, tracking the rise of the cocaine industry in the United States, attendant with all its violence. Johnny Depp, in the role of George Jung, makes him into a likable guy who has bitten off more than he can chew, with ultimately dire results. His is a search for the American Dream, a dream that forever remains elusive.
Ray Liotta is terrific in the role of George’s father, Fred Jung, a sensitive and devoted everyman married to a hard, selfish woman, Ermine Jung, a woman who lacks all motherly instincts and is played with gritty determination by Rachel Griffiths. Jordi Molla is top-notch in the role of Diego, George’s entre into the world of high stakes, cocaine dealing, and Cliff Curtis is splendid as Escobar, the Columbian drug cartel’s main man. Penelope Cruz is dreadful as George’s attractive Latina wife, Mirtha. She is simply a awful actress whose English is often unintelligible. With the exception of Ms. Cruz, however, the cast is uniformly superior.

This is the account about a young man who, faced with choices in his life, made the gross ones and lived to regret it. Johnny Depp captures the pathos of Jung’s wasted life. That his characterization is insensible on is brought home by Ted Demme’s unbelievable interview of the dependable George Jung. This interview is one of the numerous bonus features on this DVD and is well worth watching. It is a poignant interview, as it underscores that Jung’s was a life wasted. It also serves to illustrate objective how much Depp’s characterization of Jung really is. All in all, this is a vibrant, informative, and though-provoking film.
This film presses all the true buttons, but being touted as basically the true-life memoir of George Jung, I was disappointed that the film paid limited respect to the chronology of distinguished events and completely overlooked many of the defining moments of George’s career.
Having already read the book “Blow” – available from Amazon and an grand biography – perhaps I found it more difficult to fetch “into” the movie, often asking myself “why is this happening/not happening now? ” amongst other things…
A few definite changes for dramatic achieve, perhaps…..

1. George’s first girlfriend (played by the babelicious Franka Potente) tell’s George she has an incurable disease, so he skips bail to hang out with her in Mexico until she dies. In precise fact, the girlfriend was dumped shapely swiftly, was never fatally-ill (interviewed for the book) and was one of a long, long succession of girls that George archaic and discarded during his “career”. He skipped to Mexico purely because he didn’t want to go to jail, and go into “quantity” smuggling of marijuana.
2. George is basically kidnapped and taken to Colombia to meet Pablo Escobar, – a test – and this meeting “starts” the whole coke business. In fact however, George had been importing/dealing ample quantities of coke for a few years before going to meet Pablo – something he did voluntarily on his acquire, to score plot among the Florida-based Columbians and procure favour with Pablo in his problems with Carlos Lehder – a cartel member.
The movie ignores or trivialises many of George’s character traits – gigantic long-term coke usage and the resultant psychosis and paranoia, his life-long addiction to hookers, kinky sex, including masochistic tendencies played-out by cross-dressing (french maid) and being dominated and “spanked” by his wife while tied spread-eagled to their marital bed, among many others.
The turning point, the begin of his “proper” troubles is when George confides his secrets to an undercover cop whom he meets one afternoon on the beach out-front of his house. In short-order, George invites the guy into his house, tells the cop that he’s a big-time smuggler and immediately makes him piece of the “operation” without lustrous anything about the guy. This of course brings broad heat onto George, and the good-guys initiate engineering George’s downfall.
The movie omits this entire pivotal event however, perhaps because the real-life event, that for a beneficial big-time dealer with $30m stashed in the house,at least, displayed a degree of stupidity and naievety that would effect Johnny Depp’s George (radiant, hip, trusting) contemplate tedious and unprejudiced too astounding to be sympathetic.
Nor is there any true basis for the whole father/daughter interplay in the movie, which I personally deem is overdone, and is blooming out-of-character anyway.
Finally (at least for this review) the money George had stashed away in Panama, approx. $50m apparently, was not confiscated by the Panamanian Govt (Noriega) – George never visited Panama – but was stolen by the pilots who opened the bank sage for George, (co-signatories) and flew the cash down on a regular basis over several years. It defies concept that over several years, George never belief to enquire about the balance of his sage, and impartial kept shuttling the cash into the epic, but that’s what actually happened.
Carlos Lehder was arrested in Colombia – basically fingered by Escobar for bringing the heat down on the cartel because of his loopy political beliefs, extradited to the States, with George being the main prosecution study. This gained George early release, and it was actually another bust in the mid-80’s that reulted in George’s indicate incarceration. Again, none of this was in the movie, although I deem it would have brought another perspective to George’s characterisation, and also given George some revenge for his beating by Carlos’ thugs on Norman Cay (never happened) had it been included.
I guess all these and many more legal inaccuracies in combination with Johnny Depp’s overly sympathetic portrayal of George – almost a victim of circumstance – and definitely too “nice” to be in the drug business, are so far off the real-deal that it made it very difficult for me to give this movie the respect that so many others believe it deserves….
All this doesn’t conclude the movie being kindly entertainment but I can’t attend thinking how obliging it “could” have been, had it been a tiny more factual to George’s valid myth.
The cast is generally outstanding, the discover and sound of the DVD transfer never less than palatable, and the soundtrack really brought support the 70s / early 80s for me – a time of poor fashion, worse haircuts, and for most of us, a time probably best forgotten.
Buy the DVD. The book “blow” is definitely worth reading, and if you’re composed involved in the whole coke thing, reflect checking out the book titled “Killing Pablo” a accurate explore at the the coke business, the Medelin cartel, and the hunt-for and eventual killing of Pablo Escobar. Now “there’s” a movie honest begging to be made……
